When it comes to studying overseas, the Monash Prato experience is truly unique! Conveniently located just outside of Florence, Italy, the Monash Prato Centre becomes your home away from home, and the perfect European study base.

Arts Semester Programs now available in Prato

Spend up to 12 weeks at the Prato Centre in Italy studying European focused units in your area of study.


How it works

  • There will be 3 blocks with unit offerings from various areas of study.
  • Each block is 4 weeks long.
  • You can take 6-12 points per block. Up to 24 points in the 12 week period.
  • Most units are worth 6 points but some are worth 12. Check the handbook.
  • You do not have to take units from all 3 blocks and can tailor your time in Prato to suit your needs.
  • Consider studying only in Block 3 (after Semester 2 exams) if you want to be in Australia for Semester 2.

How to apply

  • Applications will open in early 2017 – check back for more details
  • You will apply directly to Arts Outbound Programs and we will submit your application to Monash Abroad
  • To start planning take a look at the application procedures for all Arts overseas programs.
  • Program fees will apply (TBC).
  • Scholarships, loans, travel insurance and other financial information available through Monash Abroad
  • Participants independently organise their accommodation in Prato*, flights to and from Italy and visas.

*All students must stay in Prato during the study periods.

Where is Prato?

Prato is a small Italian city, with a vibrant cultural life, and a beautiful historic centre surrounded by medieval town walls and picturesque Tuscan landscape.

  • Prato is also within easy reach of other famous Italian cities such as Florence (30min), Pisa (1.5hrs) and Lucca (1hr).
  • Being off the tourist track, in Prato you’ll also get an authentic tourist-free experience.
  • Prato is a great base for European study and tours.

What if I can’t speak Italian?

You don’t need to speak Italian to study at Monash Prato, but even if you just learn a few words, you’ll get so much more from your study and living experience.

  • The Parliamo! ‘crash course’ is a fun and informal way to get Italian language basics and handy cultural tips, and it’s a great way to meet your fellow students too!
  • You can have a meal with a local Italian family as part of the Buon appetito program organised through the Prato centre.
  • Study Italian (beginner/introductory or proficient) as part of intensive or semester long programs.

Where will I study?

The Prato Centre is a Monash campus, so you’ll have all the advantages of being part of Monash whilst being overseas.

The campus is based in the elegant 18th Century Palazzo Vai, conveniently located in the historic town centre and within easy walking distance of all the major town sights – the perfect environment for immersion in Italian language and culture.

How will I get there?

Prato is easy to get to from within Italy via train, and the nearest airports are Florence, Pisa and Bologna.

You’ll need to make your own arrangements for the international travel from wherever you are coming from (eg Australia or South East Asia).

The Monash Prato campus is non-residential but there are lots of accommodation options in Prato: from hotels and B&B’s to fully self contained apartments and private residences.
